Solo Wargaming

This page attempts to collect various posts and reviews about my book:

Solo Wargaming: A Practitioner's Guide (Barnsley, Pen & Sword, 2024)

The book was first conceived in the summer of 2022 and was announced to the world on this blog in March 2024. This post also documents some of the process of writing, and getting to the point of it being nearly published.

At that point, proofreading had been completed and I was waiting for the final proofs. It went on pre-order at the end of March, as noted here. I also added a few notes about the content.

Towards the end of April, I managed a post that gave some more detail of the book's contents. It was a bit hard to know how to pitch this, but I did my best.

At the end of May, I was doing the final proofreading. This was a bit scary - if anything got through at this point there would be a few hard words thought. I did manage to show a few teaser screenshots as well.

Finally, in June, I was able to announce that the book had been released and was out there in the wild.

This was followed by a time of trepidation and helplessness, as I wondered if anyone would be interested, let alone would buy it. Actually, quite a few people had kindly posted comments to the previous posts that they would. So I waited.

Even in today's internet-connected world things move slowly. The first review I am aware of was published at the start of July. There have also been a few comments on the Facebook Solo Mini-Wargaming group. These have been on the whole positive. Another review is here.

Over on Amazon, at the time of writing, there have been two reviews, one of 4 stars and one of 5. The latter comments on the book that it is full of ideas.

Actually, the 'full of ideas' thing comes up quite a lot in the reviews and comments. This is quite gratifying - I tried to get one idea a page into the manuscript. Of course, some ideas are bigger than that, and, anyway, the relationship between the manuscript pages and those of the book itself is not exact. But, I hope, there are plenty of ideas there, even if not all of them are original to me.
