Mine is a Republican Roman legionary painted as a barbarian. But I'm not going to do that!

Mind you, the quality of painting at shows has increased significantly over my time in the hobby, which presumably points to better techniques all round, and maybe still a cross-over between military modelling and wargaming, at least in terms of paint and terrain. The Polemarchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10958736917525649927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5185876513552272723.post-30880020444937684872016-07-25T06:30:14.207-07:002016-07-25T06:30:14.207-07:00In the US the Wargame convention grew out of the C...In the US the Wargame convention grew out of the Conventions put on by the MFCA Miniature Figure Collectors of America whose empasis was on painting and dioramas. Wargames were a small adjunct that they placed in a off side room (1965-69 or so. I think some tournaments do specify painted figures, though, so it must be a problem.

I do agree about the mix of the hobby, however. Many seem to go for 1 or 3; not so many hit #2 in my limited experience. The Polemarchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10958736917525649927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5185876513552272723.post-63408113306518178272016-07-25T01:44:25.525-07:002016-07-25T01:44:25.525-07:00Mm. There are some folks out there who can only understand #3. They are in it for the competition and elements #1 and #2 are unnecessary. These are the kind of folks that show up to the tournament with primed or unpainted figs.HoldFasthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08462825558758852117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5185876513552272723.post-82183527234568918602016-07-24T07:28:34.634-07:002016-07-24T07:28:34.634-07:00You dont allow for card or paper figures...They fi...You dont allow for card or paper figures...They fill the middle ground perfectly !Plasticvikinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05949611855872874217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5185876513552272723.post-34827284183419474002016-07-23T06:34:26.665-07:002016-07-23T06:34:26.665-07:00An interesting post, and you make an interesting p...An interesting post, and you make an interesting point. As Charles Grant Sr. once wrote, it's the look of the thing. While I admit a certain fascination for the layout of a classic Kriegspiel map with its multitude of small metal pieces, or even the more colorful board wargame with its cardboard counters, neither can really hold a candle to a game using miniatures and nicely presented terrain. Such displays are beautiful spectacles. As you say, some of us at least appreciate that sort of beauty and symmetry. At the risk of sounding like an old lady here (think Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey), there is a similar beauty and even elegance in a well laid table. Toss in some interesting conversation and even a bit of repartee, and we have an unforgetable dining experience even if the meal itself is take away pizza.

Best Regards,

StokesWSTKS-FM Worldwidehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14173042438761572040noreply@blogger.com
